About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world — Sri Lanka's first capital for over 1,400 years (377 BC to 1017 AD). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most sacred Buddhist cities in Asia, attracting pilgrims from around the world every day.
The city's ancient monuments are staggering in scale. The Jetavanarama Stupa, built in the 3rd century, was once the third-tallest structure in the ancient world — taller than all but two of the Egyptian pyramids. The Sri Maha Bodhi sacred fig tree was grown from a sapling of the very tree under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment — making it the oldest documented tree in the world with a known planting date.
Walking among Anuradhapura's ancient stupas at sunset — when the white domes glow golden and the air fills with temple bells — is one of the most profound experiences Sri Lanka has to offer. Our guide will bring the history of this extraordinary city to life.
